The Mary C. Burke School in Chelsea, MA has long been an
important center of community activity. The brick and masonry
school, constructed in the 1880's, contains nearly 30,000 square
feet of area in 2½ stories plus a basement. Keen Development will
convert the Burke School building into 23 artist live/work
condominiums. The permitting is complete with approvals from the
Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Board. Construction is
scheduled to start in summer, 2006.

Eleven of the studios will be set aside for people making 60%
and 80% of the area median income, with HOME funds from the North
Suburban Consortium anticipated to support this level of
affordability. All of the studios will be marketed to buyers who
are certified as artists through a process to be established by
Keen Development and the City of Chelsea. Studios will range in
size from 800 to 1,200 square feet and provide much-needed mixed-
income homeownership opportunities to help support the local arts
community. Contact Eric Ekman of Keen Development for more information
at eric@keencorp.com. Check this site
soon for news as this undertaking progresses.
