The former Peerless Department Store in the heart of Providence
has been transformed into the Peerless Lofts. This adaptive reuse
is organized around a dramatic seven-story sky lit atrium providing
access to 97 loft-style apartments. The residential uses on the
upper floors are complemented by 22,000 square feet of street level
retail. Approximately 75 parking spaces are provided at the
basement level. The property also features a gracious roof deck
with stunning city views. A commanding presence within the
neighborhood, Peerless Lofts is the cornerstone of the "DownCity"
renaissance.
Originally constructed in 1890's, what is now known as the
Peerless Lofts is actually comprised of five individual buildings.
The two most prominent are the Callendar, McAuslan & Troup building
(designed by Walker & Gould) and The William H. Low Estate building
(designed by Martin & Hall). This cluster of buildings makes up the
entire block of Westminster between Eddy and Union Streets except
for the Hannah Green Estate. This stretch of Westminster Street was
famous for housing the largest and most successful regional
department stores. In the 1980's, Peerless closed it doors for the
last time.
At Peerless, each of the 97 lofts is distinctive, with open
floor plans that provide the ultimate flexibility in arranging
furniture to suit any lifestyle. Design features include high
ceilings, exposed columns, sliding wooden doors separating kitchens
from living space, and frosted glass windows to admit natural light
from the atrium while maintaining privacy. All of the lofts feature
hardwood floors, high ceilings and gourmet kitchens. Some lofts
incorporate mezzanine levels and multiple entrances, while others
feature gracefully curving piano walls. The lofts range from 934
square feet to 2,711 square feet in size. Rents range from $1,250
to $3,400 per month, depending on the loft size and location within
the building.
The Peerless Lofts opened for occupancy in July, 2005. For
